Parkinson’s disease is an age related chronic, progressive neurological disorder that affects mobility, balancing and mental abilities of a person. PD can affect a person in several ways and can be life changing experience for both the patient and family members. The physical or motor symptoms can impact your ability to perform daily activities. Tremors, muscle stiffness and postural instability can further increase the difficulty for people with Parkinson’s disease. The most common non –motor or psychiatric symptoms include depression, sleep disturbances, cognitive impairment and dementia. However, with proper understanding and awareness of progression of disease, careful planning, activity moderation and positive attitude can help effectively manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life as well.
The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease to our loved ones can have a deep emotional impact on the family members as well. But with the positive attitude and disciplined approach one can reduce the severity of symptoms and improve the quality of life making it more meaningful. Parkinson's is not an age related disease and there are many thousands of people out there who have been diagnosed with Young Onset P D, my son included.
